ISF, also known as 10+2, is a filing process required by the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for security purposes. Information about all containerized cargo going to or through the United States must be transmitted to CBP at least 24 hours before ocean vessels leave the ports of origin and head to the U.S.
ISF was initially implemented on January 26, 2009. It is also called 10+2 since it requires that 10 pieces of information must be submitted by the importer or supplier and other 2 by the carrier. Failure to comply with the deadline or submit the correct information might result in monetary penality ($5,000), inspections, and even delay of cargo. Note that agents can also submit ISF for their clients.
